Photo Editing Websites

I know this doesn't have much to do with teaching... unless you are a die-hard photographer like I am, always taking photos of your class and editing them to look beautiful for parents by the end of the year. My favorite photo website, Picnik.com, has been bought out by Google. I love the way it works... and the richness of the features... and everything.

Here are some school-related photos I have edited with Picnik (since I discovered it in spring 2010; some are enhanced even more with other sites). They are from last year's class.

So this afternoon, I have tried finding websites that can fill the shoes of Picnik... somewhat.

BeFunky: This website seems like it can be as nice as Picnik, but it is lot slower in respects (in the "Artsy" section in particular, and does not have some of the features I am going to really miss). Unique features: Holgaart, Grunge, Charcoal, and Patriotic as well as a variety of excellent frames for your photos. Not so impressed with the graphics, though, compared to Picnik's.

iPiccy: Some unique features: the WANTED poster, old photo with ragged edge, fiery image, retro comic, shine, and rainbow. I am impressed with iPiccy, and it may turn out being a great replacement. In respects, it works just like Picnik, even with a similar way to manipulate the filter effects, and with more features that Picnik offers now, it can be sensational. There just isn't as much offered... for now.

BigHugeLabs: This is not a "photo editor"... this is more for unique photo opportunities. You can make badges, vintage photo booth strips, movie posters, and magazine covers, for example. Can be a unique way to motivate and make your students laugh.

FaceInHole: I loved these kinds of things as a kid. This can be fun for classroom photos as well. Not a photo editor, just a "bonus".

Pixlr: Not bad. I have always enjoyed this site. One part functions a lot like a less enhanced Adobe Photoshop while another part has some neat retro effects. That part reminds me of some of the photo programs I have uploaded on my iPad and iPhone. This can be a fun editor at times.

Of course, I will use the features in Google + from time to time (though it is not as nearly as incredible as Picnik), and I am also hoping the rumors of a Picnik alternative coming true. We shall see in the near future... for now, enjoy these alternatives.

  2. Thanks for this. So sad about Picnik myself. I finally broke down and purchased Photoshop. Not as quick and easy, but love what I can do.
